About This Leaderboard

This leaderboard ranks tournament entrants for Under Night In-Birth II Sys:Celes using a modified Glicko-2 rating system. It is fed exclusively by results from completed offline tournaments sourced from Start.gg. Ratings are refreshed nightly at 06:00 UTC.

Rating System

What is Glicko-2

Glicko-2 is an improvement on the Elo rating system that tracks not just a player's skill estimate, but also how confident that estimate is. Every player has three values:

  • Rating (μ) is the main skill estimator. New players start at 1500. This amount updates after a set based on a combination of how unlikely the result was and how confident the system already was in both players' ratings.
  • Rating Deviation (RD) is the uncertainty measure. New players start with an RD of 350. After each event, RD shrinks as the system gains confidence. During periods of inactivity, RD grows back toward 350 (capped there), meaning the system becomes less sure about the player without changing their rating. A returning player's first sets will count for more in both directions.
  • Volatility (σ) is how consistently a player performs. Higher volatility means the rating reacts more strongly to results. This value is not shown on the leaderboard.

Conservative Rating: The Important Number

Rather than ranking by raw rating, this leaderboard uses a conservative estimate:

Conservative Rating = Rating − 1.5 * RD

This is a conservative floor on a player's likely "true skill". Players will prove their rating over multiple events before climbing the leaderboard; a single strong performance cannot propel someone to the top.

Margin-of-Victory Weighting

Sets are not all weighted equally. Each result is multiplied by a weight based on the score:

Result Weight
3–0 ×1.30
2–0 ×1.20
3–1 ×1.15
2–1 ×1.00
3–2 ×0.85

The weight is determined by the final score, not by who won. A 3–2 loss counts for the same weight as a 3–2 win.

Unscored Sets

Some sets on Start.gg have a declared winner but no individual game scores recorded. This can happen when a TO submits a result without entering game-by-game data. These sets still count toward ratings, but at half weight (×0.50), and are shown dimmed on player profiles to make this clear.

Margin of Victory Philosophy

I wanted this leaderboard to feel like every game mattered. I didn't like how Glicko-2 just output "this player won" without digging at least a little bit more into the data. I felt like amplifying the rating update for convincing sets and dampening it for close ones, reinforces the idea that every set has a story, and every decision counts. I didn't want to mess with the algorithm too much, but I'm hoping this encourages people to think about the players behind the numbers when they look at this leaderboard, and maybe fight a little harder to win their matches too! If you have any concerns about this multiplier being included feel free to reach out via the Contact section below.

Processing Order

Events are processed in chronological order. Each event's rating update uses each player's rating as it stood at the start of that event, producing a consistent, auditable rating history.

Event Qualification

Not every UNI2 event on Start.gg contributes to this leaderboard. An event must meet all of the following criteria:

  • Offline
  • Completed: the bracket must be fully resolved on Start.gg.
  • Solo bracket: team events are not included.
  • At least 60 effective entrants: The total field size after removing players who were disqualified before playing a set. As a result smaller events may be culled unavoidably. If there is an event you would like to see factored into the leaderboard, reach out via the form in the Contact section.

Events are discovered automatically from Start.gg's data and checked nightly.

Player Eligibility

A player appears on the leaderboard only if they meet both conditions:

  • At least 3 sets played across all qualifying events.
  • Active within the last 12 months: players who have not competed in a qualifying event in over a year are removed from the active standings. Their historical data is retained and they reappear if they compete again.

I tried to use gamertag matching as a fallback for people who get added to tournaments without claiming their Start.gg account, but people may end up with multiple entries as a result.
